Writer Suranjana Baruah was chosen for the first Pallavi Barua Bhuyan literary award for translation instituted by the Pallavi Barua Bhuyan Foundation. Baruah had been chosen for the award for her English translation of the Assamese classic Miri Jiyori by Rajanikanta Bardoloi.
The award was formally presented to the writer at a function at the Vivekananda Kendra at 3:30 pm on May 27, 2014.
Veteran journalist DN Bezboruah was the chief guest of the function presided over by poet-critic Hirendranath Dutta. The memorial lecture on the occasion was delivered by critic Prof Madan Sarma. Writers Dr Sivanath Barman and Pankaj Thakur were the distinguished guests at the function.
Translator Deepika Phukan was felicitated for her lifetime achievement on the occasion.
The third edition of Grandma’s Tales – an English translation of Lakshminath Bezbaroa’s children classic Burhi Aair Sadhu– was also released at the function.
